Childhood is not merely a fleeting stage of life; it is the time when character is shaped, dreams take root, and the foundation for the future is built.

Every girl has her own dreams: some aspire to become doctors, teachers, or engineers, while others simply wish to attend school safely or live in a home free from violence and fear. Yet, for many girls around the world, these simple dreams remain out of reach; they face circumstances that deprive them of their most basic rights and impose burdens far beyond their years.

Many girls remain deprived of education, vulnerable to violence, exploitation, and child marriage, or are forced to drop out of school due to poverty or conflict. In areas of crisis and war, girls may lose their sense of security and shoulder responsibilities beyond their capacity, while access to education, care, and protection becomes increasingly difficult. A girl’s place of birth or her family’s circumstances should never be the reason she is denied a safe childhood or a better future.

The Geneva Institute for Human Rights affirms that protecting the rights of the girl child begins with recognizing her right to live her childhood, to be treated with respect, and to have her voice heard and her needs and opinions taken seriously. This entails ensuring access to quality education, protecting them from all forms of violence and discrimination, and providing necessary healthcare and support. It also involves addressing practices that deprive them of the right to make choices and determine their own futures in a manner appropriate to their age and rights.

The responsibility for protecting girls does not rest solely with institutions; it begins within the family, the school, and the community. A girl who grows up in a safe environment—where she is encouraged rather than belittled, and given the opportunity to learn and express herself—is better equipped to discover her potential and contribute to building her society. Thus, respecting girls, listening to them, and supporting their aspirations is not merely an optional extra; it is an essential part of upholding their rights and dignity.

On the International Day of the Girl Child, the Geneva Institute for Human Rights calls for renewed efforts to guarantee the rights of all girls, to confront the barriers that deny them education, safety, and equal opportunities, and to build an environment that allows them to thrive free from fear, violence, and discrimination.

Every girl deserves to experience a proper childhood, to attend school feeling safe, and to dream of her future without being told that her aspirations exceed her rights or surpass her capabilities. Protecting girls today is not just an investment in the future; it is a humanitarian and human rights obligation toward every girl who deserves a fair chance in life.

October 11, 2026 On October 11th of each year, the world observes the International Day of the Girl Child—an occasion reminding us that every girl has the right to live her childhood in safety, to learn, to grow, and to realize her dreams free from fear or discrimination.
