It is an occasion to renew calls for continued international efforts towards nuclear disarmament, reducing nuclear risks, and strengthening international peace and security.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Geneva Institute for Human Rights considers the continued existence of nuclear weapons a serious threat to human life and dignity. Their use could result in massive loss of life, long-term damage to health and the environment, and consequences that may extend to future generations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This day takes on particular importance as several states continue to possess nuclear weapons, amid growing concerns about their possible use, accidents, or miscalculations that could lead to dangerous escalation. These risks highlight the need for dialogue, transparency, confidence-building measures, and sustained efforts to reduce nuclear risks.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Institute emphasizes that nuclear disarmament is an international responsibility that requires respect for international law and relevant international commitments, strengthened non-proliferation efforts, and genuine progress towards reducing nuclear arsenals and ultimately eliminating them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Institute also calls on nuclear-weapon states to take practical and responsible steps to reduce the risks associated with these weapons, strengthen transparency and international cooperation, and move towards comprehensive and verifiable nuclear disarmament.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>At the same time, the vast resources devoted to developing and maintaining nuclear weapons could instead be directed towards areas that have a more direct impact on people&#8217;s lives and rights, including health, education, development, environmental protection and the fight against poverty.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>On this occasion, the Geneva Institute for Human Rights renews its call for stronger international efforts towards a world free of nuclear weapons, recognizing that protecting the right to life and human dignity requires reducing the risks posed by these weapons and working seriously towards their elimination.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"26 September 2026 Every year on 26 September, the world observes the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
