The Institute stresses that the impact of enforced disappearance extends beyond the victim to their families and communities.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Enforced disappearance is a grave violation of fundamental rights, including the right to liberty and security, the right to know the truth, and protection from torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. The continued lack of information about disappeared persons deepens the suffering of their families and denies them their right to justice.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Institute stresses that combating enforced disappearance requires States to prevent secret detention, investigate all cases independently and effectively, hold those responsible accountable, and guarantee victims and their families the rights to truth, justice and reparation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>On this occasion, the Geneva Institute for Human Rights calls on governments and the international community to take effective measures to prevent enforced disappearances, establish the fate and whereabouts of disappeared persons, protect their families, and ensure accountability for those responsible.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Institute honors the memory of all victims of enforced disappearance and expresses its solidarity with their families, reaffirming its commitment to supporting victims\u2019 rights and promoting accountability, justice and respect for human dignity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In a world where enforced disappearances continue to leave deep wounds, the truth remains a right, justice a responsibility, and human dignity and freedom rights that must always be protected.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Every year on 30 August, the world marks the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, drawing attention to the suffering of those subjected to enforced disappearance and their families, who continue to live with uncertainty while searching for truth and justice.
