The Geneva Institute for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs marks each of these days with a firm reaffirmation of its commitment to human dignity, protection, and accountability for all.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, 15 June

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day draws attention to one of the most underrecognized dimensions of human rights protection: the abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older people. As global populations age, legal and institutional frameworks must evolve to ensure that older people are not left behind, whether in family settings, care institutions, or humanitarian emergencies. The Geneva Institute reaffirms that protection of human dignity admits no exception based on age and calls on States to strengthen legislative safeguards and awareness mechanisms for older persons in all contexts.

International Day for Countering Hate Speech, 18 June

The International Day for Countering Hate Speech is a reminder that words have consequences. Language that dehumanizes, excludes, and incites is never merely symbolic. It contributes to discrimination, violence, and in extreme cases, atrocity crimes. Addressing hate speech requires coherent legal frameworks aligned with international human rights standards, effective institutional capacity, and sustained investment in education and prevention across all sectors of society.

International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, 19 June

Sexual violence in conflict remains one of the most severe and underreported human rights violations globally. It is used as a weapon of war, a tool of terror, and an instrument of ethnic and social destruction. The Geneva Institute reaffirms the urgent need to ensure accountability for perpetrators, strengthen protection mechanisms for civilians, and guarantee comprehensive support, justice, and reparation for survivors without exception.

World Refugee Day, 20 June

With more than 43 million refugees around the world, World Refugee Day is both a commemoration and a call for action. Refugees are entitled to protection, dignity, and durable solutions under international law. The Geneva Institute calls on States and the international community to uphold their legal obligations, invest in protection systems, and address the root causes of flight including conflict, persecution, and human rights violations.

These four days share a common thread: the urgency of translating international commitments into concrete protection and accountability. The Geneva Institute for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs remains committed to supporting this work through human rights education, legal capacity building, and advocacy in international forums.

GIHR Marks Four International Days: World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, CounteringHate Speech, Eliminating Sexual Violence in Conflict, and Supporting Refugees The Geneva Institute commemorates the international observances of 15, 18, 19, and 20 June2026 with a reaffirmation of its commitment to human dignity, protection, and accountability The week of 15 to 20 June 2026 brings
[1

post-4366","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
