Geneva Institute for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs Statement on the Occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On 25 November 2025, the world marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999, to mobilize global action to end all forms of violence against women and girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This day commemorates the legacy of the Mirabal sisters, who were brutally assassinated in 1960 in the Dominican Republic for their political activism. Their story remains a powerful symbol of women\u2019s courage and resistance against oppression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In today\u2019s digital age, violence against women has expanded into online spaces. Digital violence is real violence. Social media and digital platforms are increasingly used to perpetrate harassment, defamation, blackmail, hate speech, and the non-consensual sharing of private images, with the aim of silencing women\u2019s voices particularly journalists, human rights defenders, and women in public life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United Nations data show that 23 per cent of women have experienced online abuse, and one in ten has faced digital violence since the age of 15. Nearly three-quarters of women journalist\u2019s report being targeted, while the vast majority of non-consensual intimate content online depicts women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s global campaign calls for stronger legal frameworks, greater accountability of digital platforms, improved data collection, and sustained investment in prevention, protection and support services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ending digital violence is not only possible it is imperative. Through coordinated action, inclusive policies and collective responsibility, a safer digital and real-world environment for women and girls can be achieved<\/p>\n\n\n\n
