The founders' initial aim of promoting the principles of international human rights has lead to numerous projects being devised and carried out.
- Since its establishment in 2004, the Institute has provided practical human rights trainings in the North Africa and the Middle East region and Geneva to human rights defenders and public institutions, empowering them to access and use international human rights procedures, standards and mechanisms.
- In conjunction with training, GIHR has also delivered capacity building and advocacy services to different governmental and non governmental organizations that protect the rights of individuals with a special focus on women and children in the African and Arab Region. Specific advocacy activities have also focused on enhancing the effectiveness of the international and regional human rights mechanisms.
- It also provides consultations related to human rights issues, providing technical and informational services.
- Finally, the Institute publishes bulletins, periodical journals (see Publications) and documentation of reports related to human rights, and developes a human-rights-specific database and library.
