Training courses target human rights activists in Morocco

The Geneva Institute for Human Rights is holding several training courses for human rights activists in Morocco this month, in cooperation with the office of the German Friedrich Ebert Foundation.

The first session, set to take place September 12- 14, will target activists from Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco, addressing topics such as: the rules of the agreement and monitoring expectations, concepts and terminology of human rights, United Nations agencies, basic conventions and international and national mechanisms for the protection of human rights, and universal periodic review. Outstanding participants will be invited to attend an advanced course in Geneva at the end of October, on the sidelines of meeting of the Committee against Torture (CAT).

The second session will focus on the universal periodic review mechanism, specifically as it relates to Moroccan civil society organizations. The Kingdom of Morocco is preparing a national team to write its second UPR report, which is due to be completed by early next year. Hence, participants will be asked to examine Morocco's human rights record since April of 2008 and assess its implementation of the last UPR's recommendations.
