The Geneva Institute for Human Rights coordinated a training course on the United Nations mechanisms in the field of Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland from June 21st to June 27th, 2010.
The course provided an introduction to the basic United Nations human rights mechanisms for a group of 22 Sudanese lawyers. During the one week training session, the group was lectured by two professors and a number of officials from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Some of the subjects explored in the course were the role of the Human Rights Council, its special procedures, the Universal Periodic Review, national human rights institutions as well as an introduction to the main treaty bodies. At, the end of the session, the participants realized the importance of human rights, regardless of their jobs or careers, and were eager to take a stand and become active in this field in their country.
