Annual Report (2008)

The overall goal for GIHR for 2008 was: “To advance knowledge on Human Rights Principles with a special focus on women and child rights within societies in the Arab Region." In order to achieve this goal, the Institute had four specific objectives to achieve:

  • To build the capacity of governmental institutions and law enforcement agencies on Human Rights mechanisms and international conventions related to human rights by 2009.
  • To increase the knowledge and skills for human rights defenders and organizations on using international human rights procedures, principally UN treaty monitoring bodies in the Arab region by 2009.
  • To increase knowledge and information on women and child rights by 2009.
  • To enhance dialogue and exchange of experience amongst different stakeholders including local, national, regional and international institutions on the status of women by 2009.

Annual Report (2007)

This last year has been an eventful one for GIHR, some of the key highlights of the year have included:

  • Four Pivotal human rights training courses have been conducted in Syria with the Syrian police force. Altogether a total of 92 police officers have been trained on international human rights principles. We have become the first international human rights organization that has been able to break into the barrier that existed on the issue of human rights in Syria.
  • In Sudan two training courses were conducted on International human rights systems for 81 participants from different civil society groups. With our trainings in Sudan we are continuing our previous work in Sudan reaching out to organizations and individuals at the grassroots level providing them with the know how on international human rights.
  • Through  three Regional training courses in Geneva the Institute has been able to reach out to seven countries from the Middle East and Northern Africa and 43 participants providing them with the knowledge and know how on issues of human rights.
  • GIHR's Executive Director conducted three lectures in Sudan, Egypt and Dubai on issues of international human rights; altogether 110 participants attended the lectures. Through conducting half day lectures in various countries the Institute was able to reach out to a larger audience.
  • Through review and revamp of our website we have raised the visibility of the organization disseminating updated information on human rights allowing easy access to the latest news in both English and Arabic languages.
