The Geneva Institute for Human Rights is holding an advanced training course on international human rights institutions for a group of workers and activists from the Arab region.
The two-week session, from October 12-21, coincides with three distinct United Nations gatherings that participants will have the opportunity to observe: the 50th meeting of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, which will discuss Kuwait's report on October 13; the 103rd session of the Commission on Human Rights, which will examine the implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights; and the meeting of the Preparatory Committee for 59th session of the Committee on the Rights of the Child.
The program will gather 20 trainees hailing from five Arab countries, Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Sudan. In the courses, participants will become familiar with basic human rights conventions and protocols, human rights commissions, and the unique approaches and mechanisms that can be used to press for women's rights. They will also get to meet international experts and officials from the various human rights committees.
After their briefings, participants will be expected to analyze Kuwait's periodic reports to the Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and the Human Rights Committee, and Iran's report to the Human Rights Committee.
