The Geneva Institute for Human Rights has successfully organized an advanced regional training course from the 10th-14th May, 2010 on the Universal Periodic Review mechanism of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland.
The training course included participants from Kuwait representing various non-governmental, academic, and governmental organizations such as the Kuwaiti Association of the Basic Evaluators for Human Rights, the Kuwaiti Society for Human Rights, the Integrated Studies Institute, the Kuwaiti National Assembly, and the University of Kuwait. The training course coincided with the 8th session of the UPR Working Group at the Human Rights Council, during which Kuwait was under review. Moreover, the participants met with various authorities at the UN and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and representatives of the Dutch and Swiss Permanent Missions to the UN in Geneva. Some of the main issues discussed during the training were the protection and promotion of human rights internationally, the role of the various human rights bodies (8 main treaties), the role of NGOs in the protection and promotion of human rights, and the role of the National Human Rights Institutions as well as the UPR mechanism of the Human Rights Council, which was enhanced by the participants’ partaking in the UPR Working Group.
