Training Courses

Promoting human rights through education:The overall goal of the GIHR training courses is to contribute to the prevention of human rights violations and to the promotion of human rights through education. By providing knowledge and developing specific skills, the training courses support the international effort to build and improve the capacity of human rights defenders by empowering representatives from different backgrounds (such as NGOs, Human Rights Institutions, governments) with the skills and knowledge to make effective use of the United Nations human rights procedures. Practical and concrete advice will lead participants to apply their new knowledge and skills directly in enforcing the mechanisms and procedures.

The Institute offers two different training courses: Regional Training Courses in Geneva and Training Courses in the Field.

Objectives

Participants are trained in theoretical and practical aspects of international human rights and humanitarian law, for example the treaty monitoring mechanisms. The courses will enable participants to:

  • develop the capacity to access and use international human rights mechanisms and procedures
  • increase overall knowledge of the international system for the protection of human rights
  • update and deepen knowledge of recent developments in the international human rights system
  • promote and disseminate the knowledge of international mechanisms and procedures on the protection of human rights in their particular field of work
  • share information and experiences in the field of human rights protection.

Participants

The training courses are designed for regional and national actors for whom the protection and promotion of human rights are central objectives. These may include:

  • Representatives  of civil society: human rights defenders, NGO representatives, lawyers, judges, journalists.
  • Governments’ representatives and officials, national and regional administration, members of NHRI.
